Interview with Matt Higby who is Planetside 2's Creative Director over at pcgamer
http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/10/26/plane ... ontinents/

“We have enormous, enormous gameplay space," says Higby. Planetside 2’s settings – continents on the planet Auraxis – measure an epic eight kilometres square, with weapons capable of firing a full kilometre in distance. “One of our largest development efforts on this project has been hand crafting every single area of those eight-by-eight kilometre continents," Higby told us. In this vast space, three factions fight it out: The Terran Republic, The New Conglomerate and The Vanu Sovereignty. And those fights can become pretty vast.

“You’re going to be fighting in battles sometimes when it’s 200 people fighting against 30 people," said Higby. “Because there’s only 30 people defending that base and then suddenly 200 people log in from the other group and go do it."

I'm going to track down the mag and see if there is anything else interesting in it.

Also a new screen shot showing the mosquito that also gives you an idea of the size of the new bases we can expect to see.

There is a focus on the Terran Republic over the next few days and they will be releasing some new screenies featuring the armor of the TR.

And what some may consider a good thing and others a bad thing, they are hoping to do something PR related with Totalbiscuit.

Fixed the Mossie link and also found this which is apparently at game rez.
Also some other TR shots over at Planetside Universe that have some excellent full rez shots.

Someone at work asked me the other day to explain planetside.

I said "it is basically Tarren Mill with guns, tanks and dropships". Seeing as he didn't play WoW either that probably didn't make any sense. But I thought it was accurate :)

Matt Higby isn’t surprised there aren’t more massively multiplayer shooters out there. “They’re fucking hard to make." What surprises PlanetSide 2’s creative director is the lack of attempts by other developers to emulate 2003’s ultra-ambitious PlanetSide. “You talk to anyone who was a PlanetSide player, they’ll go all misty eyed."

Fellow ex-players, please join me in a spot of eye-misting. I played PlanetSide for a year after the game’s launch, seeing the same potential in the game that Higby still eulogises today. “It’s an excellent team-based game, it has a lot of action and it’s just cool being able to hold a tower with 50 people when 200 people are coming in to it. You can’t compare it to anything else."

Rest of the article can be found over at pcgamer.com

Remember, the massive battlefields of Planetside 2 can handle up to 2,000 players at once.
(not sure your PC will tho)

Was reading about an attempt to set a new world record by having 1000 players play a game at the same time in an FPS.
Apparently the most player dense known commercial FPS game is PlanetSide which supports 399 players in the same zone.
So that was the old record because Man vs Machine set a new record even is it was for just a few hours.

Maybe PS2 can break that record...

Some more comparisons over at Massively

and a little article on the 9yr anniversary.

So PlanetSide is nine years old this week (nine!), and Sony Online Entertainment is journeying down memory lane to look back at its ground-breaking MMOFPS. The firm is of course hard at work on the sequel, but some of the devs have taken a time-out to share their favorite memories with us.
